The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has stepped down as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This comes after a legal ruling that challenged her eligibility to occupy the role.
Attorney General's Statement
The nation's top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, confirmed the prosecutor's departure on Monday. In a statement that the judicial decision made it "untenable" for the official to effectively run her office.
"Let no one confuse following the order as giving up," she declared. "The effort will now reach across the nation."
Court Ruling
The departure comes a week after a US appeals court determined that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This ruling is could influence many legal proceedings in New Jersey.
The judicial panel said that a acting appointment that bypassed the advice and consent of the Senate ran afoul of the federal law governing appointments.
Ongoing Legal Battle
The Attorney General added that she will continue working within the DOJ as a top consultant. She will seek further review of the disqualification, with hopes of a overturned decision.
On a social media platform, Bondi argued that the court "must not countermand the executive's selection of attorneys tasked with carrying out the executive branch's core responsibility of enforcing the law."
Performance in Office
Bondi commended the prosecutor's work and said that under her leadership, the city of Newark saw a one-fifth decrease in criminal activity. Additionally that the city of Camden had its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 free from homicides.
Connection to Donald Trump
The 41-year-old attorney, originally became part of the former president's legal defense in recent years. She went on to represented Trump in his New York criminal case in 2024, which resulted in his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
Earlier, her appointment to the top New Jersey post, Trump had stated he was selecting her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, labeling her as a steadfast ally and a dedicated fighter for justice.
