Both Deceased Students Identified in Brown University Incident as Law Enforcement Press On With Search for Perpetrator.

Two students who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack in Providence were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed sympathies publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

Details of the Attack

Nine more persons were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male detained in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our city”.

The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm pistol, a police source told the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that entered the hotel recovered two firearms and two ammunition clips when the individual was detained, the news agency reported.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, one student was released from the hospital, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, friends, and fellow students and lament the passing of his promising future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in the current year, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
