British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
