New York's next mayor confirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, did not confirm this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Political Debate
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he is from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
