The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of the state is facing dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Indicates An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is without any level of drought. This shift came after multiple significant storms that replenished key lakes like the state's largest lakes far beyond their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status featured powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Until late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

But, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts have emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the next challenge is to sustaining this positive water situation throughout the months to come.
