The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
