Citizens have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.

The representative stated the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • Post-war management of the area

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."

"After we see all home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis prefer the war to finish in as payment for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of the music event, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the night comes, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."

Health Situation

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said two more dead people had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south, health workers said.
