Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
